There are websites that list the requirements for dog air travel with all airlines. The information is up to date and is changed as rules change. Before there were other options our dog air travel choices were often non existent. A pet could experience air travel but only in the cargo hold. Only like a crate of something inanimate. We did not like the choice of putting a living thing in a hold that was not pressurized or climate controlled. We have more choices today.

Very small dogs can experience dog air travel in an under seat crate. It is a small piece of carryon luggage that fits under the seat and contains the small animal. This is good for animals up to about seven or eight inches tall. The fee is minimal or is non existent at all. The carrier must have a waterproof bottom and fit under the seat in front of the passenger.

Pet air travel for larger animals still can be costly. The very best choice is to go with an airline carrier that offers companion flights. A small size animal, when properly contained, flies in cabin with its owners. Pet air travel is highly regulated now. You may have the pet travel as checked baggage or as cargo and either way they will be transported in a pressurized area that is temperature controlled. The crate will have to meet certain requirements that make dog air travel and all pet air travel safer. Items include but are not limited to water availability, labeling of the crate and size and dimensions that allow both sitting and lying down. It does make pet air travel more acceptable. For those who can afford it, private air transportation that will include them and their pet in air travel is still the very best option.

Dog travel crates provide your pet with a home away from home. They are sturdy, and protect your pet as well as the people around your pet and your surroundings. Pet travel crates make a safe place for an animal to retreat when you reach your destination, as well as providing comfortable and safe travel. Allow your pet to investigate and sleep in the travel crate while still at home, so it will be familiar to him.

A pet travel crate needs to be large enough for the animal to sit, stand and turn around in it. It becomes a safe haven for sleep and eating as well as a travel carrier. Ideally a pet travel crate can be safely secured in a car if that is how you are planning to travel with your pet. For airline travel a dog travel crate must meet the standards established by the International Air Transport Association. In addition to meeting size standards these pet travel crates must have ventilation on all sides, so that an animal will not suffocate and a water dish that can be filled from the outside of the crate.

Pet travel crates have accessories available, like new bottom liner pads and covers that are made of fabric and offer some comfort and home likeness. These are generally best suited for wire cage type crates. There are removable dividers for pet travel crates that are large but that need to serve tow animals.

Dog travel crates can be made of many things. Wood is a good substance, also aluminum crates or steel for attaching in a pickup bed. It is safe to say that there is a material for pet travel crates to suit every owner. Materials like plastic or wicker are also available for pet travel crates. You and your pet will be the best judge of the right pet travel crate for your family.
