You have saved and planned for many of your adult years to take a special trip. This is the year that you will finally be able to do it. You would love to take your best friend with you, and for many people that would be their pet. International pet travel is an option that is easy to accomplish when you do your research.
Your first step in planning for international pet travel is to contact the appropriate authorities from your destination. That would mean that you would contact the consulate for that country and get the most up to date requirements for bringing your pet to their country. The consulate will be able to let you know of any quarantine requirements as well as where to get the appropriate pet health certificates. Some countries have their own certificates. Other countries will accept a certificate from any APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) accepted veterinary doctor.
The next step in planning to take your pet on an international travel experience is to contract the transportation provider. This can be a cruise line or an airline. Generally speaking, if you have an APHIS certificate for the international countries you will be visiting, a copy of that certificate will be adequate for the airline carrier.
On many airlines small pets can ride with you in the airline cabin, for a price. They must be contained in a carrier that has a waterproof bottom and that will fit under the seat in front of you. Larger pets must fly in the cargo area, in a special, pressurized, climate controlled area. Some airlines will not allow pets to travel when temperatures are extreme out of humanitarian considerations. International pet travel is fun and can be done with some planning in advance.
